Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I’d like to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that tricky. It feels like avoiding NY adds a ton of time to the drive, which I'm not too keen on. I remember a similar trip last summer where I had to navigate some tight spots with my gear. I’m curious if anyone else has dealt with this and how you handled it. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

One more thing. Here’s a reciprocity map…

"Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console."

Please NOTE: The state of New York has VERY strict guidelines on transporting through-like you can’t Stop! I’ve a granddaughter who lives in upstate-husband is a Sheriff there. Best practice is to avoid there entirely (but I dunno how you’d get to Vermont or New Hampshire and Maine otherwise, ALL the other New England states are very strick-which is precisely WHY we need national CCW reciprocity. Can you imagine if any state tried to curtail ANY right other than 2A? But it’s ok to put in all sorts of objections to that Right. I avoid New England and Illinois like the plague.
