I'll offer my experience in getting my KY CCW

So, for starters, the Kentucky website for CCW information is here.

The short of it is you take a course ( or if you already have taken a course in the past from somewhere ) and apply online
Cost is $70 for the online application ( $60 if you go down to the sheriff's office, but it takes longer to process that way)

I applied on July 27 and got my temp paperwork about Sept 23 with a note that my permit would be ready for pick up at the sheriffs office after Sept 3 ( I didn't pick mine up until Sept 10 since I was traveling)

One of the reasons that I got the CCW was it bypasses the need for a background check when you do a purchase.

True, but that NICS check is performed instantly. So, barring some kind of weird ‘system glitch’ the approval is immediate so long as you don’t have a criminal record.

All true , it is just that I have run into the 'system glitch' or dealer "technical difficulties" so the instant check has not been so instant.

Luckily, I’ve never had that happen on a purchase, but it seems I have “weird stuff” happen on just about everything else…..to the point where I ask myself, “What are the odds of THAT happening?!?”

CCDW is great to have if you ever travel out of state. There are about 37 states that honor your Ky permit

I do travel to AZ for MIL and the Ky permit doesn't work in NM but i also have a non-resident AZ permit which does. One of the other reason that I got the KY permit was PA only honors permits from a resident and not the non-resident AZ permit.
