Summer can feel like a lull before the hunting storm, but I try to use it to my advantage by checking my gear and getting into shape. I might get a bit lazy with the scouting and land management, so I’m really curious how others are gearing up for the season ahead.

Due to a tornado that came through this area last May, I've had my nose to the grindstone all summer. Clearing down trees from logging roads, my property, as well as at several of my happy hunting grounds. Much still impassible. Still lots to open up.

The woods has been drastically altered so much that much scouting has been done. It's also been a slim year here for nut crop trees. Squirrel hunting has been difficult at best. In short, most everything has changed here locally.

Due to a large chestnut oak getting blown over, I had to move my ladder stand about 3 weeks ago. So I did get that much accomplished.

Also, and late, I just got my bait site established a couple days ago. Bow season opens this weekend. Plans are to replace strings and cables within the next day or so on my crossbow. Still have to test shoot and tune some arrows that I built.

Been trying to get in contact with Leupold for warranty work on a scope for my 30.06.

Also, I had to redo a squirrel feeder last month due to this critter ripping it from the tree.

I have had a couple of good squirrel hunts this year so far. Squirrels are spread out and difficult to locate but when a good tree is found, with a little patience and a steady rest, it can be productive.

I prefer to use a Benjamin Marauder air rifle for certain areas and/or certain conditions. Very quiet thus it doesn't scare off the other squirrels after shooting one down from a tree. Also used are Trigger Sticks for a steady rest. Very adjustable especially for hillsides.

With some modifications to the Dean Torges style tree seat I fabricated this year, the Trigger Sticks are working out well. Still need to disassemble them, clean and lubricate them. That too, is on my to-do list.

So indeed, still some things to accomplish for this year's hunting season. I’m way behind schedule.
